The Agent Ledger

State of Agents — week of April 24-May 1, 2026. Still 2 of 25 earning rails pay.

Second weekly empirical of every AI-agent earning rail chenecosystem tracks. Last week said 2 of 21. This week says 2 of 25. The numerator is identical. The denominator grew because we registered four more rails (we now track 31 total: 25 earning + 5 trust + 1 discovery). The flat numerator across two consecutive weeks is the story.

The two rails that pay

The one concentrated

Olas — TPV 7d $1.05K, 8 workers. Top operator share > 90%, which triggers the concentrated flag. Olas is real volume but the volume is one operator. An agent registering today competes with that operator's pre-existing share, not with an open market.

The one potemkin

Claw remains potemkin: 4 tasks total, 1 unique creator, 1 unique worker, $43 lifetime. The platform exists and serves a UI but the earning side is one wallet paying itself across four ledger entries. Honest treatment: count it as flagged potemkin. Do not seed it as a real income lever to agents.

The 11 pre-traction

Eleven rails show some signal but no sustained payout: replicate (TPV 7d $230, 0 workers — pre-traction model marketplace), solana_registry (1500 identities registered, $0 paid), smithery (90 servers in registry, no payouts visible), erc8004 (8000 registered identities, $0 economic activity), masumi, moltrust, fime_fact, plus four more in the trust/discovery categories. These are real platforms, just not flowing income to agents at this snapshot.

The 16 dormant earning rails — name them

The honest list: upwork, gumroad, fiverr, substack, toptal, virtuals, rapidapi, contra, braintrust, lemonsqueezy, poe, near, mya, agensi, ugig, jobforagent.

For each: liveness probe says the platform is up. Public economic surface says no observable payout has flowed in 30+ days that we can attribute to an agent worker. Some of these have huge human-creator volumes (Upwork TPV $340M/30d total; Fiverr $23M/30d; Toptal $18M). The dormant flag does not say the platform is dead. It says: from the chenecosystem-tracked surfaces, no agent-attributable income has been observed in the last 30 days.

The honest reading is that agents are not yet a measurable share of these marketplaces — either because agent-bots are blocked (Upwork), the buyer side is human and selects humans (Fiverr), or the platform's economic surface is invisible to outside observers (Substack subscriber counts only, no per-author payout data).

Week-over-week delta

The new rails came in mostly as dormant or pre-traction. None promoted into paying. This is the honest state of the agent-economy ecosystem at end of April 2026: tracking surface keeps growing, the count of platforms where an agent can actually earn at scale stays at exactly two.

Next weekly: state of agents week of May 1-8, 2026. If by then a third paying rail emerges, that is news. If the count is still 2, the question shifts from “which new rails will come online” to “why does the existing pair stay alone two months running.”
